Outdoor & Sporting Adventures in Foxborough, Plainville & Wrentham

If you arrive during the Winter season, head over to Winter Skate at Patriot Place. Rent a pair of skates and hop out onto the massive 60-by-140 foot ice rink located near all of the shops, restaurants, and attractions of Patriot Place. Pretend you’re Bruins legend Bobby Orr and play some non-contact hockey, Massachusetts hailing Olympic gold medalist Tenley Albright and work on your figure skating, or just have a pleasant end to your evening with this new take on a classic Massachusetts tradition.

If you’re visiting during the Spring or warmer seasons, and there’s no ice to skate, head over to the Independent Sportsmen’s Club in Foxborough, where you can try your hand at recreational shooting. Check out their many skeet and trap fields, rifle ranges, and sporting clay courses and learn how to fire a rifle like a Boston revolutionary. Veteran sportsmen will assist in teaching any who would like to learn, just be sure to call in advance to make arrangements to take a class in whichever firearm discipline you prefer.

After you’ve worked up an appetite skating like Massachusetts sports legends or shooting like one of Sam Adam’s Sons of Liberty, head on down to Jake & Joe’s Sports Grill for a sports themed lunch of American comfort food. Their family-style menu offers chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, salads, burgers, and any food that a hungry sportsman or woman could crave after a workout. Be sure to enjoy your fill and get ready for a busy day ahead!

After lunch, try a few rounds of disc golf (or as those in the know call it, ‘frolf’) at the Hawkins Woods Disc Golf course. Work on your flicks, backhands, hammers and ‘scoobers’ as you try to best-one another in throwing discs into baskets from far away. Explore the scenic woods of Plainville and work to beat the course record of 24 laid down by professional frolf player Marc Deblasio.

After your long day of sports outings, dine at the Stoneridge Grill and Bar in Plainville. This restaurant prides itself on serving delicious pizza, seafood, and meat made from raw ingredients put together in their scratch kitchen. A highly reviewed eating establishment to get your grub on, the Stoneridge Grill and Bar will serve as a great place to end your busy day of outdoor recreation.

If you’re not in the mood for yogurt and granola at your campsite, start the next day with breakfast at the Commons Neighborhood Eatery in Foxborough. This breakfast and lunch joint calls itself “the place everyone talks about” and states that it has the “best breakfast in Foxborough.” You can be the judge of that, but it’s a hard thing to turn down the famous Common’s “Benny’s From Heaven”, their signature eggs benedict.

Once you’ve fueled up on a classic Foxborough breakfast, head to the F. Gilbert Hills State Forest for a beautiful day hike. This forest, composed of pine and oak trees and spanning 1000 acres, features 23 miles of trails and scenic views of Sunset Lake which can be found near its center. Hike to your heart’s content and if you’re lucky, you might find the strange stone structures hiding there which some believe were built by the Algonquin tribes long ago.

Take a moment to relax at The Big Apple Farm in Wrentham after your hike and go picking whatever fruit is in season. At this farm you can find apples, apricots, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, peaches and more. Find the farm stand for syrups and jellies, as well as donuts and cookies at the bakery. This is a great place to stop and enjoy the “fruits” of nature!

Retire for the late afternoon with a little golf at the Foxborough Country Club. Boasting a beautiful eighteen hole golf course, the Foxborough Country Club offers an excellent golfing experience to both rookie and veteran golfers alike. Head to the pro-shop to buy a new set of clubs, get yourself a lesson or a scorecard, and get out on the course!

Now that you’ve been engaged in sports activities for two days, take a moment to take care of your muscles and body at the TB12 Sports Therapy Center. At this sports bar you can watch the Red Sox, the Bruins, the Celts, or whoever else is playing or fighting the night you’re visiting town while eating great food and drinking delicious beverages. Wings, burgers, beer and sports–this place has it all.

Enjoy Sunday brunch at Lake Pearl in Wrentham. All you have to do is pay for admission, and then you’re in for a wonderful buffet style meal on the beautiful Lake Pearl property. If you come at the right time, you might get to see a couple being married there, as it is a popular destination for weddings and social events.

Try to get one last trip out into nature at the Wrentham State Forest for mountain biking. There are miles and miles of winding trails and dirt roads perfect to bike with friends for an afternoon. Minimally developed, the Wrentham State Forest is perfect for somebody who loves the pure woods and an unadulterated view of nature.

On your way out, be sure to visit the Patriots Hall of Fame Presented by Raytheon at Patriot Place in Foxborough. Check out this interactive exhibit on the best football team in the country (possibly world) and see the things that made the Patriots who they are.
